Text Box: The first medical account of acupuncture was in The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine which dates from about 300 BC. It provides the theoretical foundation for acupuncture today.
The first needles were made from stone, and then later from bronze, gold and silver. Today stainless steel is used.
Acupuncture practice has gradually developed throughout the centuries until its decline in the eighteenth century when western ideas and medicine became more popular.
During the Cultural Revolution (1966-76) acupuncture was once again officially recognized. Today it is used in conjunction with western medicine in a hospital-based system.
