Text Box: Taiji Quan is the study of moving meditation. Originally it was a martial art that emphasised softness over muscular strength.
The majority of movements are slow and continuous. Concentration on the breath allows the mind and body to unite, resulting in a deep state of relaxation.
All movements originate in the tantien, an area below the bellybutton. The mind (yi) directs the Qi throughout the body and limbs. It is this that opens the joints and produces movement.
Taiji can be practiced by everyone, irrespective of their physical or mental health. Teaching methods are adapted to individual needs. Those who are fitter can practice with lower stances, whereas those who are not can practice with higher stances or even use a chair.
